How much do GitHub stars cost?

GitHub does not sell stars. There is no checkout, no bulk discount, no official price list. And yet an open market exists around them that is large enough for academic study: at least twelve websites sell stars publicly, more than twenty services list them on Fiverr, and a 2026 study accepted at ICSE measured six million suspected fake stars on the platform between 2019 and 2024.

Why one service charges $30 and another charges $900 for the same thousand stars comes down to three things: whose accounts click, how the clicks are spaced, and what happens when a star disappears. This page covers the real market prices, the removal research, and where our own pricing sits.

Why do stars have a price at all?

Because the price is not for the star. It is for the person behind it. Giving a star takes one click and costs nothing, so what you are paying for is access to accounts that will click it - and the infrastructure that makes those clicks look like a real audience instead of a delivery.

The demand side is easy to explain. In a 2018 study of 791 developers, three out of four said they check a project's star count before using or contributing to it. Investors do the same thing with bigger numbers: an analysis by Redpoint Ventures partner Jordan Segall of 80 developer-tool companies found a median of 2,850 stars at seed stage and 4,980 at Series A. When a number becomes a funding signal, a market appears around it.

The three price tiers, and what each one buys

Every commercial offer we looked at falls into one of three bands. The difference between them is almost entirely the accounts they use.

Concrete examples from public listings: SocialPlug advertises stars from about $0.20 each; GitHubStars.com shows $15 for 50 stars ($0.30); a mid-sized provider packages 1,000 stars at roughly $68. At the top of the market, prices approach $0.90 per star, and in private channels a single five-year-old account with an Arctic Code Vault badge trades for around $5,000 - because history is the expensive part, not the click.

The jump from $0.03 to $0.80 per star is not 26x better software or 26x better advice. It is the price of age: accounts that existed, committed and were active long before you needed them. Whether that premium is worth paying depends on one question only - do you need the number to survive a cleanup, or do you need it this week?

What the research says about cheap stars

The most detailed public analysis of this market is a peer-reviewed study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon, North Carolina State and Socket, presented at ICSE 2026. They built a detection tool called StarScout and ran it across 20 terabytes of GitHub metadata - 6.7 billion events and 326 million stars from July 2019 to December 2024.

What they found:

  • Scale: six million suspected fake stars across 18,617 repositories, involving roughly 301,000 accounts.
  • Acceleration: before 2022, fewer than ten repositories per month showed fake-star activity. By July 2024, a single month involved 3,216 repositories and 30,779 accounts.
  • Penetration: by July 2024, 16.66% of repositories with more than 50 stars had participated in fake-star campaigns.
  • Consequences: 90.42% of the repositories StarScout flagged were eventually deleted by GitHub. Only 57% of the accounts were cleaned up.
  • Effect: bought stars produced a promotion benefit for less than two months, then became a liability. Seventy-eight manipulated repositories still made it onto GitHub Trending.

The study also documents the detection signals, and this is the part that matters when you are comparing quotes. Campaign stars came from accounts with "highly trivial activity patterns" - empty profiles with no repositories and no followers. In a separate 2026 investigation, independent verification of 20 repositories found 36% to 76% of stars coming from zero-follower accounts, and fork-to-star ratios less than one-tenth of the organic baseline. One verified case stands out: a repository showing 111 stars where reviewers could only vouch for two of them.

Three checks that reveal what you are actually buying

Before paying anyone - including us - run these checks on any repository that has bought growth:

  1. Fork-to-star ratio. Healthy tools run near or above 0.1; the study lists a manipulated repository at 0.017 against a comparable organic project at 0.235. If a repository has 5,000 stars and 40 forks, the numbers were not earned.
  2. Stargazer profiles. Open the stargazers list. Accounts with no repositories, no followers, and no activity are the exact signature StarScout flags.
  3. The shape of the curve. Real growth has a slope - stars arrive across days and weeks in uneven clusters. A vertical line followed by silence is a delivery, not an audience. What a fair price should include

Price alone tells you little. Two services can charge $30 per 1,000 and deliver completely different products. What separates them:

  • Account age. Years of commit history behind every action, not registrations from last month.
  • Pacing. Delivery spread across 12–24 hours and beyond, never a single burst.
  • Signal mix. Stars arriving alongside forks, watches and followers, because a lone number jumping is the pattern that gets reviewed.
  • Replacement terms. A no-drop guarantee that is actually honored - "we will look into it" is not a guarantee.
  • Traceable delivery. Enough visibility that you can verify the curve yourself afterwards.
  • No per-unit upcharges. Custom numbers should not cost more than a preset package.

One honest warning about how you use the numbers

Buying engagement is regulated when it misleads people with money on the line. The FTC's 2024 rule on fake reviews and testimonials carries penalties up to $53,088 per violation, and US securities law applies when inflated metrics are used to raise capital. GitHub's own terms prohibit fake stars. Paid visibility is a marketing decision; presenting it as proof of traction in a fundraise or a sale is a different category of decision. Keep the two separate.
